Where epoxy flooring is commonly used
Garages
The most common residential use. Resists oil and road-salt staining and is easier to sweep and hose off than bare concrete. Garage guide →
Basements
Basements are the highest moisture risk because the slab sits below grade. A moisture test is especially important before coating a basement floor.
Workshops & pole barns
Chemical and abrasion resistance matter here. Ask about thicker build systems and chemical resistance ratings for the products quoted.
Small commercial spaces
Showrooms, salons, light industrial, and back-of-house areas. Slip resistance and any requirements from your landlord or insurer should drive the spec.
When epoxy may not be the right choice
- Persistent slab moisture. Standard epoxy can blister or lose bond when moisture vapor pushes up from below. Moisture-tolerant primers exist, but they add cost.
- Strong sunlight. Epoxy tends to yellow (amber) with UV exposure. Polyaspartic or urethane topcoats are often used where sunlight reaches the floor.
- You need the space back fast. A full epoxy system can take up to a week before vehicle traffic. Faster-curing polyaspartic systems may suit you better.
- Badly damaged concrete. Heavily spalled or settled slabs may need resurfacing or replacement before any coating. HomeGuide puts concrete resurfacing at about $3–$7 per square foot.
Metallic and quartz finishes
Beyond solid colors and flake, installers offer metallic epoxy (a marbled, glossy look popular in basements and showrooms) and quartz broadcast systems (very durable with built-in texture). These usually cost more than standard flake. Ask installers for photos of jobs they have completed themselves.
