Frequently asked questions

How much does a garage floor epoxy job cost in Grand Rapids?

National cost guides put professionally installed epoxy at about $4–$10 per square foot, or roughly $1,600–$5,800 for a 2-car garage (HomeGuide). Your price depends on size, slab condition, and coating system. See our cost guide.

How long before I can park on a new epoxy floor?

For traditional epoxy, HomeGuide cites 16–24 hours before light foot traffic and 2–7 days before vehicle traffic, with full cure around 7 days. Many polyaspartic systems allow driving much sooner. Follow your installer's product guidance.

What's the difference between epoxy and polyaspartic?

Epoxy is usually less expensive and builds thickness well but cures slowly and can yellow in sunlight. Polyaspartic cures fast (often a one-day install) and is more UV-stable, but usually costs more. See our comparison.

Can you coat a garage floor in a Michigan winter?

Sometimes. Epoxy is commonly applied at 60–85°F, and the concrete itself has to be warm and dry enough. Heated garages or low-temperature-rated products (many polyaspartics) can make winter installs possible. Ask the installer what slab temperature their product requires.

Will epoxy stop road salt damage?

A properly bonded coating seals the surface so salty meltwater can't soak into the concrete, which helps prevent new salt and freeze-thaw scaling. It won't repair existing damage, which needs patching or resurfacing first.

Is an epoxy garage floor slippery when wet?

Smooth, glossy coatings can be slippery with snowmelt on them. Ask for anti-slip aggregate in the topcoat or a textured flake finish.

Do I need a moisture test?

It's a good idea, especially for basements, older slabs, or floors with a history of damp spots or peeling coatings. Common tests are ASTM F1869 (calcium chloride) and ASTM F2170 (in-slab relative humidity). See moisture testing.

My old coating is peeling. Can you coat over it?

Generally, failed coatings need to be ground off so the new system bonds to sound concrete. Expect that removal to add cost.

Are DIY epoxy kits worth it?

Kits are cheaper but typically thinner, water-based products applied after acid etching. HomeGuide estimates water-based epoxy lasts 3–5 years versus 10–20 for 100% solids systems. They can work for light use if prep is done carefully.

Are you the company that installs the floor?

No. We're a free referral service. We pass your request to an independent local installer who contacts you directly. We don't vet, license, insure, or guarantee any installer, so please check insurance, warranty terms, and references yourself.

Does it cost anything to request a quote?

No. Submitting the form is free and doesn't obligate you to hire anyone. We may be paid by the companies we refer requests to.
